Back working on the book

It’s been a few months with an injured shoulder, procrastination and a summer holiday, but I’ve come back refreshed and with much more motivation. I’ve been working on a book with my dad for the last year, but the last time I had done anything on it was January and it had been rotting ever since.

Getting back from holiday last week after a 3 week break and I really do feel much more motivated and ready to try to finish the book now. We have even set a publishing date for it, to give us an extra little push.

The book is a memoir and informational book about life at sea as a midshipman in the 1960’s with the Blue Funnel Line. The transcript is from his midshipman’s log book and is an important historical document as once he (or anyone) was promoted pass midshipman in Blue Funnel, they had to stop writing personal logs.

Blue Funnel Line was an interesting company to work for as they kept slates in the wheelhouse for the daily logs and then wrote them up in the official log every one to three days. No other log was kept. They also didn’t insure their ships, only the cargo, due to the belief that if it was insured it would allow the crew to not be as observant and safety conscious as they should be.

Voyage of MV Glenroy in 1962

Out of the 9 voyages detailed in the book, I’ve now transcribed 6, plotted the routes and am waiting on my good old dad to provide the voyage estimating distances.
