*Cheeky steak recipe explained separately
At Scouts we love to cook, so this is the first of a few recipes that we use on scout camp.
We cook this for the adults – it is cooked predominantly as bribery for adult volunteers to either come on camp in the first place or to start doing more with the promise of more steak and Camembert in the future. It is well known tactic and well received by the adults after the younger kids have gone to their tents. To up the ante you can also add a cheese board, as camping does not mean we have to live like animals!
Ingredients:
- Camembert cheese
- Sourdough loaf
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 2 tbsp of thyme
- 2 tbsp of olive oil
- Garlic butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
1. Preheat campfire – make sure the embers are spread evenly.
2. Cut a hole in the centre of the sourdough loaf, making sure not to cut through the bottom of the loaf. And keep the top of the loaf.
3. Place the Camembert cheese in the hole of the sourdough loaf.
4. Slice the top of the Camembert in a crisscross fashion.
5. Mix together the garlic, thyme, olive oil, salt and pepper.
6. Pour the garlic and thyme mixture on Camembert.
7. Cut grooves in the outside of the sourdough loaf and fill with garlic butter.
8. Place the lid back on the loaf on top of the cheese.
9. Wrap in tinfoil (for preference double wrap).
10. Place in embers, turning regularly for about 20 minutes or until you think it is done.
11. Remove, let it cool for a few minutes, shoo away Explorers that are trying to steal your hard-earned reward and dig in with sliced steak or your choice to dipper.
You can also add some other ingredients such as bacon, chopped nuts, or dried fruits to enhance the flavour.
